Well recorded 16 bit audio files have noise floor at about 96db or so (1bit ~ 6db). Most of my music is at this bit depth, and I have a DAC that covers this (Focusrite Scarlett). With a 24-bit DAC and a 24-bit (or higher) volume control going into the DAC, you're not losing bits until you've attenuated the signal by ~48 dB. Add to it that for typical rooms, the few lowest bits of a 16-bit DAC will be well below the room's noise floor until you're playing at a level that has ~120-130 dB instantaneous peaks.
