16 Bit Audio Recording: What The Heck Does It Mean?

For most people recording in home recording studios, 16-bit audio will probably be good enough. Your computer can also handle 16-bit audio files faster than higher bit words (24, 48 and 96 are other common bit lengths in audio). There is more to tell about the properties and relative advantages of using 16, 24 or even higher bit rates.
16 bit Audio - produce New Media

Consider the quantified theoretical dynamic range of 16 bit audio (96 dB). When recording with a mic in a typical environment – your system is incapable of effectively utilizing the full dynamic range of 16 bit audio due to the noted (elevated) perceived noise. When producing Podcast audio, wide dynamics capabilities are irrelevant.
What is bit depth in audio? 16 bit, 24 bit and 32 bit ...
https://www.mixinglessons.com/bit-depth/
The most common bit depths for recording and bouncing audio are 16 bit and 24 bit. 16 bit provides each sample with 65,536 possible amplitude values. 24 bit provides each sample with 16,777,216 possible amplitude values. As such, 16 bit provides you with 96dB of dynamic range between the noise floor and 0dBFS. 24 bit provides you with 144dB of dynamic …

16 bits is still possible, just haven't found an example yet. Actually, the Arduino Mega, if someone would do a 64k SRAM Shield, it would be possible to use a 16 bit DAC with it via the SPI lines. I'm sure sample rate would be low and sound would be mono, but heck, crazy things could happen. ;-)

CD: reproduces audio in 44.1kHz (Sample Rate) and 16 bits (Bit Depth); DVD: reproduces audio and video in 48 kHz (Sample Rate) and 16 or 24 bits (Bit Depth); Bluray: reproduces from 96 to 192kHz (Sample Rate) and 24 bits (Bit Depth). It does’t mean though, that to reproduce a CD, you must capture the audio in 44Khz and 16 bits. When it comes to …
