no matter how much will you spend, you can connect a 200$ or a 30$ microphone into your 550D/T2i , the automatic gain control will ruin the audio with a constant background hiss. I tested a 30euro microphone that i bought from china (ebay) and there is the same background noise that you can listen with a Rode microphone.

The solution was to change the audio bit depth in the camcorder preferences. Unfortunately, I can't find any info on the audio bit depth for the 550D. I did a web search and even went to the Canon site but no info (I suspect it's 8 bit b/c it's mono). Therefore I have 2 questions: 1. Does anyone know what the audio bit depth is? 2.
