Apparently with the 7000 series they run in an ultra low power mode and this interference with your HDMI audio output. (I can hit info on my receiver and see it trying to connect to my 7970 and lock onto the audio stream, Video worked perfectly) Some guy over at overclock.net posted the fix.

Which is cheaper depends on whether you already have the HDMI cable. One tradeoff in DVI to HDMI adapters/cables is they typically do not support dual link DVI.

Upgraded to 12.7, same issue. Removed just the HDMI driver (reverted back to the MS one), same issue. Finally got it kind of fixed by rolling back to 12.3. HDMI audio works well now except occasionally switching between inputs it would loose the handshake and HDMI audio out would be disabled until a full reboot.

Afraid i dont have an answer but i am running my crossfired Matrix HD 7970's through a monitor and via hdmi with an hdmi adaptor to the LG plasma tv i own. Have you tried swapping the dvi port you are using? and also the switch on the card perhaps? I believe the switch alters the output of the dual link port.
