The AT815b requires 9V to 52V DC phantom power or a 1.5V AA battery for operation. A battery need not be in place for phantom power operation. I don't know if you have the "b" model, or whether this statement reflects an engineering change. In any case, it doesn't seem likely to me that a battery would be required if you're using phantom power.
