edit: some G92 cards dont work either, my first gen 8800GT wont work with SPDIF audio, it was a known bug at the time of launch fixed with 9800GT's. edit 2: and you definitely need an DVI to HDMI adaptor, cant use straight DVI. not all adaptors will pass audio either, so try more than one. Not true, there's tons of info on the net about 8800 gt, gts's and many other nvidia cards (lower / higher) with audio over DVI - they use the extra DVI pins to transfer the audio and an S/PDIFf connectection to the video card to deliver the audio to it from soundcard / motherboard.

An adapter can take the DVI standard and translate to HDMI, but passing audio through depends on how the DVI connector is setup outside the spec to provide the audio pth. Worse, the reference GT board HAS the SPDIF passthru on the PC board, but noone so far has populated the components to activate the circuit.
