An adapter can take the DVI standard and translate to HDMI, but passing audio through depends on how the DVI connector is setup outside the spec to provide the audio pth. Worse, the reference GT board HAS the SPDIF passthru on the PC board, but noone so far has populated the components to activate the circuit.

I cannot use the RCA or optical inputs for sound, since it will only accept HDMI audio from the same port is it displaying HDMI video. I would have to use an external audio receiver to play the sound if I wanted to use DVI->HDMI for video on that TV.

AFAIK in nvidialand, only the 8800gt can output 5.1 audio over the HDMI connection. The question of how or if was raised in another thread and there is no confirmation eitherway yet. edit: some G92 cards dont work either, my first gen 8800GT wont work with SPDIF audio, it was a known bug at the time of launch fixed with 9800GT's. edit 2: and you definitely need an DVI to HDMI adaptor, cant use straight DVI. not all adaptors will pass audio either, so try more than one.
