I tried unplugging the HDMI cable form the TV and the sound came back on. It seems to me for some reason the TV thinks the 8800GT is outputting audio and is hence muting the 3.5mm input. To make matters worse the TV doesn't have an option to force the use of the 3.5mm input so I'm stuck with blank HDMI audio coming from the 8800 GT.

edit: some G92 cards dont work either, my first gen 8800GT wont work with SPDIF audio, it was a known bug at the time of launch fixed with 9800GT's. edit 2: and you definitely need an DVI to HDMI adaptor, cant use straight DVI. not all adaptors will pass audio either, so try more than one. The issue is there is NO audio on DVI. So any dongle that includes audio passthru is by definition "custom". Question is whats up with NV and the HDMI audio. The place for the SPDIF connector is on the reference PCboard, just next to the SLI bridge, but none of the boards out has it implemented, just empty spots on the soldermask.
