Considering you have a 9600GT I'd say that it doesn't have a HDMI audio device on it. Apparently, when the drivers are installed, the 9600 is detecting that it's connected to an HDMI screen and merrily sending my audio output through the DVI-to-HDMI cable, instead of letting the motherboard's perfectly good 5.1 audio handle it.
