The answer is to minimise interruption to the flow of data to the AirTunes device: Avoid WiFi anywhere in the setup. Connect iTunes Mac to your router/hub as well as the AirTunes both via Ethernet cable. Only have iTunes on your mac running, close Chrome, Word, etc. By all means COMPLAIN TO APPLE, this product is a disgrace.

All audio goes to the same output. For instance, I can have iTunes running and Pandora running and the audio from both overlap one another. I don't know of a way to send Browser or DVD player audio to output A and iTunes audio to output B. It would be awesome to be able to route the audio to different outputs! 04-26-09: Jeanluc07

So here we are, five (5) years later and I'm on a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011, iTunes 10.5.1, and a 2005 a/b/g Airport Express (AEX) and still the same problem of AirTunes / AirPlay dropout. I've noticed two things - minimising routing and the tip above do help, but not eliminate, the problem.

In any case, with Shareport stopped, the Shairtunes 2 (fork) plugin installed, and Airplay running, I get the same issue; Airplay breaks up. Playing a song… is impossible… listening to a podcast via Airtunes is … irritating, because of the audio gaps. I have had some good discussion with Phillipe G. on this.
