Show activity on this post. Well, this confuses me for a long time. As far as I know, ALSA is a package of many sound card drivers, and PulseAudio is a audio application that operate the sound data like mixing or equalizer. But why there is a control bar called PCM in the panel of alsamixer.

Nov 13, 2020 @ 11:57pm. ALSA provides the low-level hardware sink with no default mixing. Pulse uses ALSA as a backend while providing a mixed sink for applications in a multitasking environment. Most of the 'mushiness' from Pulse comes from the default fast-and-dirty mixing and resampling methods it uses.

Additionally, it's to my understanding that ALSA is tied to Linux, but PulseAudio just acts as an abstraction layer on top of ALSA, and can work on other platforms. My conclusion is that ALSA would provide lower audio latency on most Linux systems, while my colleague contends that PulseAudio provides better (shorter) latency regardless.

To the OP - generally ALSA with dmix will just work, the only 'lack' compared to pulseaudio for normal usage is slightly more complex BT setup and no per-app volumes. Pulseaudio gives you that, and is generally easier to use IF IT WORKS FOR YOU for desktop usage. If you're not the standard desktop case, you wouldn't be asking anyway.

Noob’s Guide to Linux Audio: ALSA, OSS, and Pulse Audio ...

PulseAudio was initially released in 2004, and it’s now included and enabled by default in Ubuntu, Linux Mint, openSUSE, and other major distributions. dmix has the same kind of effect within the ALSA library, but PulseAudio gives you more flexibility, and someone else said that in his experience it runs faster and gives less latency. PulseAudio provides an ALSA plugin, so you can do, for example, (with the right stanza in .asoundrc) aplay -D pulse song.wav

Alsa or PulseAudio? : voidlinux

A suggestion: do not start pulseaudio as a daemon or a service. If it is installed, programs that use it, like pavucontrol or firefox, will start it automatically, using dbus I think. Most programs, like firefox, will only use alsa as a fallback in case pulseaudio is not available. Firefox developers do not even support Alsa anymore (which is a ...

So I decided to skip pulseaudio and only use Alsa with Dmix, and the sound works great! No problem at all with the sound. Added ”autospawn = no” to /etc/pulse/client.conf, but I notice some higher cpu usage. I have set sample rate with Alsa to 44100. mpg123 uses 30%, and mplayer 80%. With pulseaudio mpg123 it is 1-2% and mplayer 20-30%.

About. PulseAudio emulation for ALSA. The program provides an alternative partial implementation of the PulseAudio API.
