As i understood, the config option alternate-sample-rate should make pulseaudio switch to a different sample-rate when there is only a stream connected to the output that matches that value. I prefer to keep the default to 44100 to hear music and just switch to 48000 when i watch movies.

I justed tested it with ALSA only ( mplayer -ao alsa -srate <rate> <file> ): Rates 44100, 48000, 32000, 22050 worked (!) and only rate 11025 failed (freezes mplayer, cannot kill process, have to reboot). ppuskari commented on Jul 19, 2012 Thanks! I have been playing with ALSA a bit more too.
