ALSA or Pulseaudio / Newbie Corner / Arch Linux Forums

To the OP - generally ALSA with dmix will just work, the only 'lack' compared to pulseaudio for normal usage is slightly more complex BT setup and no per-app volumes. Pulseaudio gives you that, and is generally easier to use IF IT WORKS FOR YOU for desktop usage. If you're not the standard desktop case, you wouldn't be asking anyway.
Pulseaudio or Alsa : archlinux - reddit

PulseAudio was fun: it used 48 kHz (since it's what my card used), which Alsa then downsampled to 44.1 kHz, causing an even worse sound quality. OSS4 justs works, has less overhead, a smaller latency, a much nicer API, and a much much much better sound quality. 3 level 2 Anonymo · 10y

The job of PulseAudio is to pass sound data between your applications and your hardware, directing sounds coming from ALSA to various output destinations, such as your computer speakers or headphones. That’s why it’s commonly referred to as a sound server.

ALSA is an API for communicating with a soundcard that the kernel exports to userspace, and as such ALSA is: a) very close to the hardware (and therefore there's differences in what is exported depending on what the hardware is capable of) b) it's device-centric.
What is the difference between alsa and pulseaudio? - …

Pulse is an audio server and does mixing, then outputs to Alsa. Without it or JACK you can have one audio source at a time. Alsa is a low level audio interface/driver system. It doesn’t do much more than outputting audio to the right card. Which can be enough for some uses, but most interactive systems have multiple potential audio sources.

Pipewire is a new multimedia framework that is replacing pulseaudio. However, we have been having problems using pipewire with Manjaro KDE… I - The standard KDE audio volume control is no longer available; II - We no longer have the audio configuration options (hardware) in the “System Settings”; III - When we add a new audio device (a bluetooth headset, for example) …

Of hardware hence ALSA -level issues which can at most be said to be triggered from PulseAudio; clearly unsurprising with PulseAudio the practically only direct user of ALSA left on a standard system. As a (more or less so) PulseAudio-level issue there's really only the hotplug/ordering issue, particularly involving HDMI/DP.
