I had the same problem, and using Alsamixer solved it for me. In Alsamixer, I had to select the correct audio interface, and for the HDMI the audio was in the "muted" state. After selecting the HDMI audio, all I had to do was press "M" to unmute, and it worked!

I think it's not seeing the gpu for sound because alsamixer shows what I believe are volume levels / outputs, and when I go to the intel sound card I have volume bars, I do not for the GPU on alsamixer.
