You shouldn't mess with any conf files or alsamixer if you use (or are forced to use) PulseAudio. Afaik Gnome has its own audio configuration in the settings, otherwise use pavucontrol, you can set the default card there. Do not mess around in alsamixer or /etc/asoundrc if you use PulseAudio! Also make sure you have pulseaudio-alsa installed.

1 I would like to disable the auto-mute feature and tried to do so by deactivating it in AlsaMixer. Unfortunetaly, this does not work. The setting is being ignored. When I start AlsaMixer it shows only two controls (Master and Capture), although I've already set "View" to "All": I think this is because the default sound chip is PulseAudio ?!
