In my experience the ATI 8MX2 sounds more transparent, I liked it a lot on string ensembles. The API 3124 is a bit of a favourite for kick, snare and rock electric guitars, a bit harder sounding, maybe not as much "air" as the ATI. As far as Midas and API comparisons, my gut feeling is that API sounds more "open".
