It has been starting in 64 bit mode with no issues for the last month. With DVD's I had audio but no video. The only solution I found was to restart the macbook in 32 bit (default) mode. Viola, DVD's run perfectly. Don't know if it will solve anyone else's problem but I suspect a firmware/software issue with this particular macbook model.
