Thank you. The pavucontrol option helped me achieve HDMI sound output to my TV on Linux Lite 5.6. Note that there, one can also right-click on the sound/speaker (bottom left), select "Properties", and then click on "Run Audio Mixer". From there, follow the instructions above for typing pavucontrol from the terminal (Configuration->Profile, etc.).

By default, with or without and external monitor connected, the audio is heard from my notebook speakers (or from the headphones, when I plug them in). My external speakers are connected to the external HDMI monitor, so they should sound whenever the HDMI audio output is being used. The controls/levels I get in alsamixer are these:

Assuming your enabled output device name is HDMI-0. Just try running this command: xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on.

Your options are to either run the Catalyst or AMDGPU-PRO drivers (not recommended at all as you need to downgrade major system components), wait until kernel 4.15 when support lands, or try using one of the linux-amd-staging* packages in the AUR. Last edited by Slithery (2017-11-05 21:14:58)
