Want a good sub, go to a sub company. SVS, HSU, Power Sound Audio, and Velodyne make very good moderately priced models, $500 to $2K range. Velodyne DD series can be pricey, but they offer a quite a few moderately priced models. These are sub companies, SVS happens to be a sub company that makes speakers, for instance. Polk's DSW series are fairly good sounding subs.

However, there are a lot of choices in your budget range so it would pay you to look and listen around before making a final decision. Great sub for my miata, put it in a small sealed enclosure and tuned the amp to accomodate it and the sound in my 92 miata is better than a $2000 bose upgrade on a new car.
