The power-indicator LED is blindingly bright, while the display is a little too muted. [3] The CD drawer is a bit fast and aggressive. [2] and [3] seem to vary from unit to unit. After almost a year of trying to replace a sweet old Philips/Magnavox single-CD player that finally quit after 15 years, the Cambridge Audio Azur 540C is a relief.

The 540C V2 includes multiple separate power supplies for the D/A converter circuitry, audio filters, clocks and other stages, as well as extensive use of low impedance film capacitors. You can see where costs were cut, in the horrible cheap RCA jacks for example, but even back then this was a lot of CD player for the money.

All reviews suggest that the V2 is the one to own unless you're going to modify the player with a tube output stage as I am doing, in which case the V1 or the 540C are a bit simpler to modify. I'll try to post an update when all the work is finished.
