Oscillation may be triggered by clipping of the audio signal, in some situations. This means that an amplifier can have no apparent oscillation problem at low output level, but may oscillate if the amp is driven hard into clipping, with the same input signal. A triangular waveform signal is useful for this observation.

I think this may well be due to the op-amp driving the first transformer. Previously I mentioned that the Q1 would look like about 100 ohms of load to L5 (325 mH) and if this load impedance is referred to the primary it will overload the op-amp and easily produce the extra 17 degrees to cause oscillation.

The 100R resistor between the op-amp output and speaker output was also removed. The amplifier now does not oscillate audibly without input signal applied. At a very low level input the amplifier sounds more or less ok, but at slightly higher levels a …

No amplifier has infinite bandwidth. The response eventually starts to roll. off, and phase shift increases with the rolloff. If the phase shift hits 180. degrees before the gain falls below unity (1), you have the conditions. needed for oscillation -- /positive/ feedback (180 + 180), plus gain greater. than one.
