A change of 1 dB in sound level is barely perceptible to a listener, while 2 db is readily perceptible. An attenuation of 3dB corresponds to cutting power in half, …

May 06, 2021. Gain (dB) = 10 × log (target signal power / reference signal power) For example, in a certain stage of the transmitter's circuit, a radio frequency signal with a power of 10mW is amplified to a power of 100mW, and the gain of this stage of circuit is 10×log (100/10)=10dB. Again, the gain of the amplifier does not amplify the energy of the signal itself, …
(Audio) Amplifiers: attenuation + fixed gain OR no ...

Attenuation is usually used with a fixed gain amplifier because altering the gain of the amplifier changes its frequency response which has implications for stability. However at audio frequencies, active volume and tone controls where amplifier gain is variable are very feasible and commonly used.
What is the difference between gain and level?

In electronic audio, there is a way of thinking that positive gain is provided by active devices - devices that take electricity from a power source and use it to boost the signal. Level in a downwards direction - attenuation - can be controlled by passive devices that need no power source - a couple of resistors will do nicely.

You can set the 360.3 remote to subwoofer level before this and make sure is at maximum 0db zero attenuation during gain setting. This allows attenuation of the subwoofer level. Next you get a nice recording track high quality like wav or flac with a full dymamic range of the audio spectrum something like Queen Greatest Hits.

Re: What is gain and attenuation? Post. by 26CAB40 » 30 Jul 2012, 13:47. Your receiver has a 'built in' or unity sensitivity, a consequence of it's design, if you add pre-amplification you are adding gain, this could be artificial via a transistor pre-amp or with an antenna with increased gain (Yagi or co-linear).

The expressed voltage gain in dB (voltage amplification) at the cutoff frequency f c is 20 × log 10 (1/√2) = (−)3.0103 dB less than the maximum voltage gain. The expressed power gain in dB (power amplification) at the cutoff frequency f c is

In-Line Attenuators. Here's the solution to a problem from which far too many audiophiles suffer - too much gain in the system. The symptoms are easy enough to spot - the volume is plenty loud enough with the volume control set to the 9 o'clock position, too loud with the volume control at 10 o'clock, and fine control at low levels is impossible. This may seem like nothing more than a …

Yes, in this case the attenuation would be between the phono section and the integrated amp. I'll be using the Ifi Phono 2 (coming this week) into the back of a tube amp. The cartridge looks to be a medium output MC (0.9 mV). The Ifi is adjustable gain (I can do 48 or 60db in this case). They are recommending 60db for a cart that is 0.3 to 1.2 mV.
