As to the sound but no picture error, this is new in Quicktime. A similar issue is seen in the WMP plugin, but that has a sulution - you have to right-click on an embedded WMP player and select properties, and set video acceleration from full to half. That solves it for WMP, but QT has no such option. Have you checked your video card drivers?
