Level 1 - Frequency response The cassette format has an inherently poor frequency response. Consider that professional reel-to-reel tape is normally run at 15 inches per second (ips), or 30 ips for superior high-frequency response. Cassettes run at one and seven-eighths inches per second. There's no way they are going to have a decent HF response.

A really good cassette deck will have a high frequency response in the range of 16-18 kHz using Type II tape. Metal tape can be as high as 20kHz, and normal bias form 12 - 16, depending on the tape deck and noise reduction used or not used. Decks from Nakamichi, Tascam, Denon, etc, tend to sound more open with better high frequency response.

The Dolby Model 422 was used for professional and commercial audio cassette mastering. The advantage of using an outboard Dolby decoder is better Dolby signal tracking. Because Dolby noise reduction is encoded in the high frequencies, any loss in high frequencies during playback will affect the Dolby performance, resulting in a more veiled sound and other …
