It only affects audio cd playback and rip. DVD and all other functions are normal. The drive sees the cd info and tracks but as soon as play is attempted the player fails to respond and 'greys out'. The PC freezes and needs a power off reboot. A soft reboot and the PC no longer 'sees' the samsung drive.

I would suggest you try a different CD/DVD drive if possible, and/or using a lens cleaner disc on the drive. The 'freeze' you are describing sounds like the drive having problems reading the disc....
