It appears that the Microsoft Fix-it tool fixed it so Via HD Audio is the only default device to control Recording Volume and Advanced Volume button and slider settings and it has, therefore, greyed out these controls in Sound & Audio Devices. In short, VIA HD Audio is now the only device to control Recording Volume - and it works!
