Can I run audio signals through a dimmer switch to control ...
https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/244591/can-i-run-audio-signals-through-a-dimmer-switch-to-control-volume
Dimmer switches work using a triac to control the mains voltage. The turn-on point in the mains half-cycle is varied to reduce the effective voltage. The dimmer works with mains voltages. Your audio will only be around 10 V or so. The dimmer works with constant mains frequency and amplitude. Audio signals vary in both frequency and amplitude.
Dimmers causing buzz in audio - Sweetwater

Lighting dimmers that use big, inductive coils can cause hum to be induced in audio equipment just by being in close proximity. Dimmers that use potentiometers or solid-state circuits (as many inexpensive home dimmers do) will cause hash noise and other garbage to be induced. In both cases the induction often occurs through the electrical wiring.

Similarly, solid-state light dimmers can create havoc with audio gear. These devices work by changing the amount of time the full power line voltage is applied to the light being controlled, as opposed to actually raising and lowering the voltage. Although AC power is supplied by the power company as a pure sine wave (having no harmonics), the ...

I have a ton of dimmers in my house and am also obsesed with clean power. I am a lighting guru and have several recessed lights and such throughout the house and was not going to change my lifestyle of nicely dimmed lights opposed to overly uncomfortable bright lights for an audio system-I found a way for them to exsist together.

Another suggestions would be to use a different line to supply the audio system (or dimmer). Best would be a seperate dedicated audio line. Use a very low wattage bulb with no dimmer. Or if you want the ultimate no noise dimmer, replace the dimmer with a variac (variable autotransformer).

I guess a LARGE choke in series will *reduce* the hash, such as the Olde "stage pack" dimmers used. As I recall, the Berkey/Colortran packs has an iron-core choke that was the size of a decent power transformer used in an audio amplifier. Another dimmer brand (name forgotten) used a torroid perhaps 4" in diameter and 2" thick.

Northville, MI. Sep 10, 2003. #7. I would guess that illumination comes on steady when you turn on the parking lights or headlights, and the dimmer wire comes from the dimmer rheostat in your dash. Basically the same except the dimmer one …
