AUDIO DRC - Sony

DRC stands for Dynamic Range Compression. I have Sony Bravia 4k TV hooked up to Sony HT-RT5 5.1 Sound system. Basically I Have DRC OFF on both for best sound quality. DRC will make the transitions between something like dialogue in a Movie to an explosion less prominent. I prefer to listen to the soundtrack the way it way actually meant to be heard.

It should be "off" for best results. Even though the manual recommends using compression, I wouldn't recommend it. Essentially, DRC keeps volume levels "stable". It's effective for those that don't want to be startled with loud "booms and bangs". Page 61 provides info: http://www.sonystyle.com/wcsstore/So...set-185303.pdf
What is DRC on Soundbar and Is It Good?

Obviously, for the “best” experience, you should leave DRC set to “Off”, but for practical reasons (like late-night viewing, adjacent neighbors) you may want to turn it on. In theory, the DRC will make your loud scenes (commercials) less loud while making soft dialog louder.

Jan 17, 2021. #1. My Sony sound bar has an Audio DRC option which is on auto (it has the other options on on/off), the Sony TV has Dolby Dynamic Range which is Standard or Compressed. I think probably for the best close to original audio these should be off, but I can see the benefit, so one of these features I would like on.

Quick Tip: For Best Audio, Turn OFF Dynamic Range ...

If you play these discs with Dynamic Range Compression enabled the bass audio (in particular) will simply sound anemic! So the Rule of Thumb when setting up new Home Theater gear is to look in EACH Source device, and ALSO in your AVR, for settings related to Dynamic Range Compression and/or Loudness Adjustment, and turn all that stuff OFF!

Only works for Dolby Digital and TrueHD, has no effect on DTS or DTS Master Audio. If you have a capable system and are not worried about volume this can be set to off permanently. User #492548 190 posts. BlurayGuy. Participant reference: whrl.pl/RdcxlY. posted 2012-May-29, 2:48 pm AEST ref: ...

How things sound when using DRC is decided by the producer of the soundtrack. It's really up to you whether you want DRC on or off. I'd recommend using it if some parts of the speech in a film are hard to discern. When I saw Star Wars episode 3 in the cinema, it didn't have a very loud soundtrack, in fact it was quite quiet. ...
