Ubuntu has it's own audio driver for sound. You are only checking to see if you get sound in Ubuntu. If you don't, it is most likely because the hardware has failed. If you DO get sound in Ubuntu, that indicates the problem is with Windows and drivers. No point in playing with drivers and Windows fixes if it is a hardware problem.
