Both outputs are alway live on the DirecTV receivers. you need however to configure the Onkyo to get the audio from the optical input. I recently upgraded to 4K with the Genie and UHD mini's. When I had my 4k Samsung TV installed I started getting audio dropouts for about 1 second every 5 minutes. Very annoying.

The audio drop outs are usually sparse but sometimes every 3-5 minutes on some programs- like when my wife watched trading spaces the other day. I have been having the audio drop out issue as well. At first I thought it was only on recorded DVR material, therefore a hard drive seemed to be at fault. After connecting an external SATA harddrive to my H20 Directv DVR I thought the problem was fixed. I was wrong. However the problem only seems to happen on the locals derived from satellite.
