Fixed the problem. I have a Roku, Tivo, DVD player, etc. connected to a receiver for the multi-channel audio. Then HDMI cable to the TV. I found a gen 1 Chromecast and plugged it into the receiver. Turned out that was the problem. Removed that and the dropouts on the Roku stopped. Can't even guess how that could cause a problem.

Sony recommended updating the software (it was already up to date) and then a factory reset, which I did except I had to change a video display setting to get 4:3 content to display correctly. The audio drop outs re-occurred within half an hour, I paused the DVD, powered down then powered up and the dropouts were gone for the remainer of the show.
