I had the exact same problem when transitioning from FCP to Premiere the other month. It was indeed incredibly frustrating. I solved it in my instance by keeping my projects and cache on the system drive (Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/6.0 on a Mac). Haven't had the audio dropouts since.
