It is a problem if you're downmixing a surround sound audio track to stereo (or mono). Obviously, if the dvd has it, it's better to listen to the dedicated stereo tracks since presumably the mix will be more suited for systems without surround sound.

your dvd player may be sending out 5 channels of audio and your TV can not handle that. some movies have a 2 channel stereo option. find one fo those dvds, make sure in the audio options it is set to 2 channel and see if you still have that problem. in your player options, without a movie in the system, see what the default setting for audio is.

When playing a DVD movie must set level at 100 just to have a minimum usable sound. Even Netflex app or an audio disc streamed from the DVD app has adequate sound level. The sound bar is connected to my Samsung TV via optical because the TV does not have an HDMI-ARC input. The samsung Blu-Ray player is connected via HDMI to the TV.
