AES AE-3 hum zombie thread lives again! I also have a AES AE-3 that has low level hum. This one is a factory built remote version with the oil cap upgrade (Audio 1 2 uf caps that are huge). Renewing this thread from 2018. I replaced all of the electrolytics with German F&T's (except 2200 / 25v used is same as original Nichicon).

The AE-3 is about the most minimalistic preamp circuit you can conceive of. It has a choke filtered power supply, a 6SN7 voltage amp input stage and a 6SN7 cathode follower output stage, with a three-terminal monolithic regulator powering the filaments. That's it. There were several factory upgrades you could order when ordering the kit:

You may want to hold on to your AE-3 until you can get a good deal on a DJH version. I have not seen many for sale here on audiogon but I would consider snatching one up if you can get one used for under $1000. You also may want to call AES or Upscale Audio to see if they have any demo models available to sell.
