The AE3 made a dramatic improvement in this mid fi system. The Yamaha is a high current design with plenty of headroom but it can be a tad dry. The AE3 did far more than warm up the sound - everything is noticeably better (imaging, soundstage, resolution). Most important, it now sounds much more musical - like night and day.

Add Your Review for the AE-3 I have had a plain AE3 for about six years and have now replaced it with the DJH Signature version, upgraded with silver solder, NOS tubes and the RVC-2 remote volume control. Good as its predecessor was, this pre-amp is absolutely stunning for the relatively small price, and looks (if they matter) wonderful.

The Cary AE-3 comes in two models, the base unit and the DJH signature model. The DJH model is tube rectified also. Warmth, lush, bold sound. For what it is worth, I have the AE-3 DJH and am very pleased. You may want to hold on to your AE-3 until you can get a good deal on a DJH version. I have not seen many for sale here on audiogon but I would consider snatching one up if you can get one used for under $1000.
