Markup on Speakers and AMps : audiophile

          https://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/comments/9ohvc4/markup_on_speakers_and_amps/
Box speakers (towers, bookshelf, etc) were traditionally retail priced at a 45-50 point margin at pink cost (ie, before whatever discounts for volume or prompt pay). So a speaker listed for $999/pair often had a cost of $500. Custom product (inwall/inceiling) could vary more widely, often coming in at 60pt.

Another shocker, the markup at wholesale is about the same. Double. Or more. So you take your typical $5k component, speaker or whatever, cable, does not matter. Dealer cost $2500, cost to manufacture, $1250. Ballpark numbers. This explains why everything at the cheap end is such absolute crap. The earbuds that cost $30 were made for $7.

From what I noticed, subs hardly have any markup (at least at BB). Maybe 25% to 35%. Amplifiers are closer to 50%. Some up to 60%. Head units don't have that much markup either. I'd say an average of 40%. Keep in mind, as mentioned, they are authorized dealers on everything, so their initial cost (wholesale) is higher.
