I can't comment on the dacmagic but the beresford caiman is pretty reasonable as a preamp/dac. I find a little sibliance with the caiman but apart from that for the money it is good. Your other option could be an audio gd nfb 12 which in my opinion has a more smoother sound but alas I have not used this as a preamp only has a headphone amp.

In between used a Beresford Caiman and Audio-gd NFB3 DACs running off a DVD player. The Caiman was more detailed that the Droplet, but ultimately too "electronic/artificial" for my ears. The NFB3 is crazy good for its $299 asking price - battleship build quality, detailed, liquid, natural sounding (for the price).

Audio-GD products measure terrible and their site is.. weird.. with weird google translated claims. Yet it would be very entertaining to let all the people who call Audio-GD crap, trash and what not do a volume matched double blind test as I'm certain that the majority wouldn't be able to reliably pick the Audio-GD from a Topping or something similar.

The Audio GD have a rather large footprint and are quite heavy, so if that is an issue look elsewhere. If you have objections to Chinese-built components look elsewhere. The current usual suspects that come to mind are the Zodiac+, the Wyred4Sound DAC2 and the PS Audio Perfect Wave, as far as peak performance erring on the more revealing side.
