You need to go to Edit/Audio Hardware Setup and make sure that you have your correct audio device selected for input and output. Normally it will be 'Audition 3.0 Windows Sound' if you are using the onboard soundcard or the appropriate ASIO driver if you have an external USB audio interface.

There you can select your audio device and set the default Input/Output channel along with which driver to use.
