Offloading AU/VST plugins to an external device (like an audio interface) with an onboard DSP processor reduces the load on the CPU Using non-USB audio interfaces (Thunderbolt/FireWire) doesn’t increase CPU load because …

Does an Audio Interface Reduce CPU Usage? The answer to this question isn’t a simple yes or no. An audio interface can reduce CPU usage if it’s the right type. DSP audio interfaces are much better at reducing CPU load than generic ones. Connection type also plays an important role, with thunderbolt having the advantage over USB devices.

If you don't care about recording latency, just jack up that buffer size which will help with CPU. All that being said, the most drastic way to decrease CPU usage is: working with audio (freezing / bouncing tracks) using sends to reduce separate plugins on multiple tracks. upgrading to a good multi-threaded CPU.

The audio interface won't have much, if any, influence on your performance if that performance is limited by CPU-hungry plugins. Reducing latency can help, because it means the interface is not requiring as much CPU time for itself, but you'll see vastly diminishing returns.
Can an external audio interface reduce CPU usage ...

Thunderbolt and firewire interfaces do not bother CPU at all, so it leaves its power for your audio work. With this external sound card the performance increases a lot. But... the lower possible latency is 32 ms with USB audio codec, and with Asio4all is 9 ms. Nevertheless, it`s not noticeable while playing.

Erick Moral there are interfaces that reduce the cpu load they are DSP based. They are more for latency issues but may fix your problem and other problems as well. I didn't read all of your post but when I saw your computer and setup I think I see your issue. I also thought I read where you don't use external drives and you should.

So, although most audio interfaces now offer 24-bit/96kHz and even 24-bit/192kHz options, reducing your song’s sample rate to 44.1kHz will more than halve your CPU load at a stroke. And the good news is that this is unlikely to make a significant audible difference, unless you’re recording acoustic instruments with very high quality gear or are using a poorly designed audio …

Does an audio interface reduce CPU load? Audio interfaces do not reduce CPU load. Low buffer size and latency will cause more CPU usage, so it’s important to find the perfect balance. Processor usage can also get high with more tracks and VST plugins. Does it matter what audio interface I use? In most cases, audio interfaces are specialized ...

This might be an obvious solution, but I would really recommend you to download ASIO4ALL if you don't have it allready. This audio driver helped reduce my CPU usage by 50%+! It's free and it also is good with low latency. As already being menioned the audio interface does nothing for CPU, but the audio driver is definitely important. Hope this helps
