The jack sense circuit includes left and right amplifiers and a cross-drive impedance sensing circuit. This cross-drive impedance sensing circuit, which is electrically coupled to the left and right audio ports and the left and right amplifiers, detects the resistances of left and right output loads in order to determine characteristics of a device connected to the CODEC audio jack.

Headphone jacks have extra contacts inside, which act as switches. The the drawing below, pins 4 and 5 are intended for sensing that the plug was inserted. They are not intended for audio signal. When the plug is not present, the switche, which are formed by 2 & 4 and 3 & 5, are closed. When the plug is inserted, these switches are open.

Obviously 1&3 would go to the mic jack and 5 and 9 would go to the headphone jack. Would 2 be the ground for the mic? Where is the ground for the headphone? What do I do with the rest??? It would make sense to me that the front sense just gets connected to the sense 1 return - complete the circuit, right? what about sense 2 return though.
