If the LS-1 is anything like the 2, tube rolling could make a difference. I don't know what tube is in your amp now, but to my ears an ECC288 like a Philips or Siemens will make a big improvement. Perhaps you can fiddle around with tubes a bit before getting rid of the AR. Satch, Apr 18, 2008. #2.

Audio-Research did make exactly this claim in an ad for the previous LS1. I'm inclined to concur, so far as the LS3 is concerned. However, I use it most frequently in the (active) 'normal' mode partly because I do a fair amount of recording which can't be done in the 'direct' mode.
