I am trying to get an FT-897 to work with packet using the data port connected to a rasberry pi running direwolf. I am using the Fe-Pi soundcard and a transistor PTT circuit wired to to the Pi's GPIO pins. Everything seems to be working, except for the audio level. The 1200 baud output from the radio is connected to the Fe-Pi line in left channel.

You will probably have to change some menu settings to switch the am/ssb audio input from the mic jack to the data plug. It still won't be wide band, maybe 3 to 4k max. You could use something like a behringer 802 mixing board. It has a mic preamp, 3 band eq and phantom power if you use a condenser mic.
