The 24/96 DAC-Zero processor and CD-Drive are next in the chain. The DAC also utilizes a 6111WA tube in the output stage. The P Zero monoblock amps are small and light enough to carry with one hand. Each produces eight watts via two ECL882 (6BM8) tubes run in class AB2. Those eight watts power Audio Note’s AZ-Two speakers.

To that end, does anyone have any experience with the Audio Note Dac Zero? This is the 24/96 one, not the unflitered/non-oversampling ones which are a fair bit more expensive. Emporium have a NOS Zero for under 400 quid which on the face of it seems fairly reasonable, although I have no real knowledge of its strengths/weaknesses.

The Audio Note Zero DAC uses a conventional 24bit/96kHz delta-sigma oversampling DAC chip by Burr Brown. Only the Audio Note DACs with the designation "1x" do not use oversampling (that's to say: any of the more expensive AN DACs). All of those non-oversampling AN DACs use the "Analogue Devices AD 1865" which is an 18 bit chip.

To unfold higher-resolution content — 24/192, for instance — an MQA-capable external DAC is required. Since your Audioengine D1 DAC isn’t MQA-capable, the bottom line is that 24/96 playback is the best you can expect from Tidal Masters files. For many listeners, that should be sufficient to satisfy their hi-res audio craving.
