I got +/- 1.5v (3.0 volts peak to peak). This was not under controlled conditions with a known audio source. I would guess that the output could peak at higher than +/- 3v (6v peak to peak). Show activity on this post. In some cases [ not extreme cases] due to the ground looping it may get up to more than ~60V.

The PC knows what is going into the D/A converter and uses that information to determine the output level. If you could back feed the low level audio output jack on the sound card with some audio, it would not show up on any software VU meter program. Only audio data that goes into the D/A can be displayed.

The standard for consumer equipment is .447V peak, and on professional equipment it’s 1.736V peak. Now Line impeadience can vary a lot, from 100Ω to 10kΩ, resulting in a current of 0.03013696W to 0.0003013696W, or 0.01736A, to 0.0001736A, on professional equipment. Not a lot of power.

How to Wire it: Computer OUT to stereo IN The easiest way to connect the audio output of your computer is to use the "line" output of your sound card. We recommend a stereo 3.5mm mini phone plug to dual RCA cable or mini plug to dual RCA jack adapter with a RCA jack stereo cable to go to the audio input of your sound system, such as the "aux ...

All modern specs use the dBu which is a voltage. reference of 0.775V and all equipment is 'voltage matched'. Another reason for high levels is digital recording. It makes sense for the. digital clip point to be similar to the clip point of the electronics driving. it. 0dBFS is often around +19dBu.

Use 20 Ga. solid copper enamel coated "magnet" wire, (10 ohms per 1000 ft, rated at 1.4 amps). The +/- 15 V power supplies should be able to source / sink 1 amp. The TIP120 heatsink should be suitable for 15 watts minimum. You might also consider an open collector (common emitter) output circuit, which has more voltage gain. Bob S

This results in the output voltage at pin 6 to remain low with no signal. When an audio tone is applied to C1, the voltage across pin 3 of the IC is slightly higher than pin 2 causing the output at pin 6 to go high. Because the output of the IC is pulsating in accordance with the tone frequency, capacitor C2 filters out the 700Hz output.

The actual information that is exchanged between the devices is the variance in voltage; it is this alternating voltage signal that conveys the information, making the current irrelevant. Line out Line-out symbol. PC Guide color lime green. Line outputs usually present a source impedance of 100 to 600 ohms.

Most audio equipment will put out rms voltages around 0.3V while playing music, but make sure your inputs will be able to handle the possible 3V peaks without significant distortion as most music will regularly hit those peaks for short fractions of a second. EDIT: bad formatting. you should see +/-2v at most.
