A MiniDisc is a magneto-optical disc housed in a tough plastic case, similar to a floppy disk. Despite some commercial releases, the format was primarily meant to be a replacement for analog cassette tapes. Although it was a digital format, MiniDisc heavily used ATRAC compression to fit audio on the 60-, 74-, and 80-minute discs. Advertisement

MiniDisc had a truly unique value proposition, unattainable by any other consumer technology at the time. As a portable player it wasn’t as volatile as CD, which tended to skip and jump while you were bopping down the boulevard with your headphones on. It produced superior audio quality to cassette tapes which were already fading away.

The audio quality also suffers to some extent because of digital>analog>analog amplifier>analog transfer>digital conversion. I've bought a Sony MiniDisc player (MZ-NF810CK) about a year ago, as I needed it for a radio station.
Mini-Disc (MD) vs. CD sound quality - Home Theater Forum

MiniDisc uses the Atrack compression scheme, which "throws away" sounds that we supposedly cannot actually hear in the mix, and comes very close to CD quality. Certainly far closer to CD than MP3, but MP3 compresses into much smaller files. The newer Atrack schemes are less likely to have any noticable sound artifacts than earlier implementations.

Drag MP3, FLAC, or WAV files to the web browser window to record them on the MiniDisc. When you do this, you'll be prompted to choose between SP, LP2, and LP4 modes for your recording. You'll probably want SP, which is the highest quality; LP2 and LP4 let you record more content at the expense of some audio quality.
So, how lossy is minidisc? | Steve Hoffman Music Forums

My experience with Minidisc is that the sound takes on a somewhat grainy, harsh, cold feeling in the upper midrange, but there's not any perceptible loss of frequency range...the difference is somewhat more in what you feel than what you hear, if you know what I mean.
