PCM=Pulse Code Modulation (outputs in 2 channel stereo) I'm sure someone will be able to give you a far more technical answer but the quick answer is, unless you set your DVD's audio output to RAW(Bitstream) you will not be able to output 5.1 via digital co-ax/optical cable to an AV Amp/Receiver for surround sound (5.1/DTS).

Raw is for 'bitstream'. It will pass DD, DTS or PCM stereo. PCM is for PCM stereo only. That would make sense. larry C chaarlieee Registered Joined Nov 12, 2005 270 Posts

On RAW setting the range feels more dynamic and there is a little more punch to the sound, but the delay is slightly worse. This ends up with a chorus effect most of the time time that is annoying so I just set it to PCM usually. The last article I read on the subject says that there is no difference in quality between the two.
