I would suggest the D-400 MKII Audio Research solid State power amp as an excellent choice for a high end system that is moderately priced. I have the D-400 MKII, ARC SP9-MKIII, MIT 330 RCA ( non-network) and ARC Litzlink 1 RCA interconnects along with a pair of Vandersteen 3A signature loudspeakers in my system.

I've been running two ARC D400mkII amps in a vertically biamped configuration for a number of years now with truly wonderful results. It's a low global feedback design with class-A biasing to approximately 25wpc. One awesome feature is a separate tranny for the input stage. Dynamics (macro and micro) are two strong suits of this amp.

Audio Research D400 mk2 Recently when powering up/down one of the 4 big caps under that big board arcs ( light blue)for a few seconds. The amp will power up ok and it stays on and sound great. If I just touch that area I hear a spark. I pull plug to power in/out as the switch seems to make it sound louder.

Jeff, These are all discontinued amplifiers, but I think there are a few Audio Research models that are worth considering: 100.2, D200/300/400 and the D130. The 100.2 (100W @ 8, 200W@4, 1998-2003) is among the best solid state amplifers I've heard in recent history- clean, dynamic, great imaging, natural timbre and detail.
