I bought one in 1984 for $249, IIRC. It was the cheapest TT you could buy at the time that had a decent audiophile quality. The old original AR-XA decks were of legendary design and value, and the ES-1 was an improvement with its much better tonearm, aesthetics, and sapphire bearings.
