If the LS-1 is anything like the 2, tube rolling could make a difference. I don't know what tube is in your amp now, but to my ears an ECC288 like a Philips or Siemens will make a big improvement. Perhaps you can fiddle around with tubes a bit before getting rid of the AR. Satch, Apr 18, 2008. #2.

The LS25 MKI is a very good performer, but will be quite a bit more expensive than the LS2B. I have tried the LS15 in my system and it is a fine linestage.

The LS1 is one of the best sounding preamps in stock form. With an upgrade similar to the upgrade of the Audio Research SP9 MKIII and a NOS Telefunken 6922 tube this preamp sounds amazing. (The SP9 MKII and the LS1 have the exact same line stage only the SP9 MKII has an added phono stage and when upgraded to the MKIII also sounds awesome).
