Audio Research preamps have come a long way in the last 20 years or so. I would try to find an LS16 mk2. The LS16 mk2 and LS25 mk2 were two of the first ARC preamps to use the 6H30 tube. They are more detailed and holographic than previous preamps. A huge improvement even over the original LS16 and LS25 preamps.

At lower supply voltages biasing the heaters at 0v works fine and at higher the hum is minimised when the heater is biased at a positive voltage, in this case 70v. The transformer output is around 18v ac.

Had it for about 1 year. There is nothing wrong with the LS-26. As to your question about the LS-25 MkI vs the LS-26, there is a difference. The LS-25 Mk II onwards marked ARC's switch to a more modern neutral sound in their preamps coinciding with the switch to the 6H30 tubes in their pres.
